Khum — the Silent Witness of Ancient Taraz

The khum (large ceramic vessel) discovered at the open-air archaeological complex of the Ancient Taraz settlement is a unique example of the material heritage of medieval civilization.
This large ceramic vessel was used in that era for storing grain, liquids, and cereal crops. The khums, handcrafted and kiln-fired, attest to the advanced trade, domestic, and agrarian culture of Taraz.
According to archaeologists, this khum dates to the 8th–10th centuries. Traces of firing and geometric ornaments are preserved on its surface. Such vessels make it possible to study the daily life and economy of ancient city dwellers. Today, the khum is displayed on a special platform in the "Ancient Taraz" archaeological park. It is a silent yet eloquent artefact that has reached us from the depths of millennia.
