Water Pipes of Ancient Taraz: A Model of Medieval Engineering

If we delve into the depths of history, we can see that the Ancient Taraz settlement was a center not only of trade and culture, but also of engineering thought. As a result of archaeological excavations, it was established that Taraz had a medieval water supply system. This testifies to the high level of urbanization and quality of life of the population in that era.

The pipes, made of fired clay, were laid underground: 10–15 cm in diameter, with a polished inner surface, precisely fitted together to facilitate water flow.

Technical feature: the pipes provided water supply to every part of the city. The water system was supplemented with irrigation channels, special filtration devices, and taps.

Water sources included the Talas River and mountain springs. These natural resources were used as the city's main water supply sources.

There is evidence that this water supply system served not only the homes of the wealthy nobility but also the dwellings of ordinary citizens. This, in turn, demonstrates the advanced infrastructure of the city of Taraz and the high level of hygienic culture among its inhabitants.
