Ancient city Kostobe (VI-XII centuries)

The settlement of Kostobe is located east of the village of Sarykemer on the right bank of the Talas River, on a floodplain terrace. The settlement is identified with the city of Dzhamukat (Khamukat), founded in the 6th century by Bukharian Sogdians who migrated to Turkestan. Mention of Dzhamukat is found in the 10th century geographer al-Maqdisi, as well as in "Tarikh-i-Bukhara" by Narshakhi. The settlement was surveyed in 1938 by the SAE IIMK and the Kazakh Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences by A.N. Bernshtam. The settlement of Ornek is located 7.7 km south of the village of Ornek, on the banks of the Altynsu and Shybyndy rivers in the Sulutor gorge. The settlement was surveyed in 1985-86 by the archaeological expedition of the Dzhambul Regional Museum of Local History and the archaeological expedition of the Inventory of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Ch.Ch.
